Road Trip From Broome to Cape Leveque - A Perfect Way To Enjoy Nature

The 2 to 3 hours drive from Broome to Cape Leveque across the Dampier Peninsula is a destination for nature lovers where there is lots of fishing, camping and long stretches of sandy beaches.

You will certainly need a 4WD vehicle for the trip to handle the 206 kilometres drive on the partially unsealed Cape Leveque Road which can be rough (unsealed, sandy and corrugated) but once you get further north the roads are good. Check road conditions and closures before embarking on your trip.

Once you arrive – you will be amaze by the rich red sandstone capped by pure white sand dunes and beaches (pure silica) - the beauty and colours of the Kimberley. This is a unique wilderness coupled with a stunning coastline with vast array of wildlife and marine life - truly nature’s beauty.

The Aboriginal communities here welcome visitors and are happy to share their history and unique culture techniques and their special relationship with their land and the ocean.

You will get to learn more about the lifestyle of the local Indigenous peoples with their bush foods and traditional medicines and their hunting and fishing techniques.

Places To Visit:

Beagle Bay – one of the first Aboriginal community that you will pass. Check out a true “Bush” church - the famous Sacred Heart Church. The beautiful altar is decorated with mother-of-pearl shell and stands out for its simplicity and devotion. Whilst the ceiling is plastered with hundreds of mother of pearl shells to represent the stars and glisten a soft silvery glow.

Middle Lagoon - a popular holiday spot with locals with great fishing. The shallow lagoon is safe for swimming. There is lots to do here – beach combing for colourful shells, reef walking, whale and bird watching and eating mud crabs. This is a gorgeous place with camping and self-contained log cabins and some visitors even prefer it over Kooljaman.

Kooljaman - this award-winning wilderness camp is owned and run by the Indigenous Bardi Jawi Communities. Built on native title land there are a variety of accommodation all designed to capture the ruggedness of the Kimberley region. From the signature red pindan cliffs to the pristine white sandy western beach and finish the day with a glorious sunset - This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

One Arm Point (aka Ardyaloon) a few kilometres past Kooljaman is another great place to stop. Take a tour of the hatchery a working aquaculture centre breeding juvenile trochus shells. Try one of the fishing tours offered but please beware the northern waters are a crocodile habitat.

Lombadina - another Aboriginal community to the north where accommodation and tours are better established. The beach here is absolutely stunning with white sands and pristine turquoise waters and one can spend all day snorkelling in crystal clear waters

There are many more communities that you can visit at Cape Leveque. If you do not have a car – you can join the many tours to this area starting from Broome. Many tour operators offer packages for day and overnight trips.
